Hindustan Motors is one of the oldest car manufacturers in India and was one of the largest before Maruti Suzuki India Limited launched M800. It sold the Ambassador model in the country which is largely based on British car, Morris Oxford. The company was founded in 1942 by BM Birla and is still a part of Birla Technical Services Group.
General Motors entered India in 1994 with 50:50 joint venture with Hindustan Motors. It produced Bedford Trucks, Allison’s Transmissions, Vauxhall and other off-road equipments for General Motors India. Later in 1999, General Motors bought out Hindustan Motors.
Currently, Hindustan Motors has a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors from Japan and its sells their Mitsubishi brand of cars in India. In the MUV segment, it has a number of successful brands like Trekker, Porter and Pushpak. RTV minivan is quite popular model as an urban carrier pan India.
Hindustan Motors has its manufacturing units in Uttarpara (West Bengal), Thiruvallur (Tamil Nadu) and Pithampur (near Indore in Madhya Pradesh) and Hosur (Pondicherry). With an annual turnover of more than Rupees One billion, Hindustan Motors is still a leading manufacturer of Utility Vehicles, Passenger Cars, Earthmoving Equipment and other power products.
