Renault Announces its Small Car Plans

Bajaj, Renault and Nissan had announced last year that they will introduce an ultra-low cost car by the year 2012. French car maker Renault has now announced that its upcoming small car will be smaller than Maruti Alto. Bajaj will handle the sourcing, manufacturing, engineering and designing of the car while marketing and selling of the car in domestic as well as international market will be done by Renault- Nissan alliance.

"The car that we are discussing with Bajaj is smaller than the small car. A small car like Maruti Suzuki's Alto or a 1.2 litre car is not on the table for discussion of Renault Bajaj. We are discussing a smaller car than the small car," said Renault Asia Africa Management Committee Executive Vice- President Katsumi Nakamura.

Bajaj MD, Rajiv Bajaj, further made a statement that the ultra-low cost car manufactured by Bajaj will have 70-80 percent component common with its two-wheelers or three-wheelers.

Bajaj and Renault-Nissan had earlier announced to introduce its ultra-small car in 2011 but the project got delayed due to difference of opinion between the partners. Now the car is scheduled to be launched in 2012 as the project goes on track once again.
