Fiat and Suzuki had developed SX4 as a compact car in collaboration with each other. It was introduced at the Geneva Motor show in 2006 after which Suzuki markets the car as SX4 while Fiat sells the same model as Sedici in European countries. The car is simultaneously produced at the Hungary plant in Europe for Fiat.

SX4 has marked a phenomenal success in the Indian car market for compact sedans. Maruti Suzuki is able to meet the market demands for the product and now it shall not introduce its hatch back version. The company planned to produce 60,000 units of the mode out of which 2/3rd would be sold by Suzuki and rest by Fiat. After the success of SX4 in India, Fiat may not launch the same model in India under its product portfolio.

SX4 was originally planned only for the European markets but now its versions are available in Japan, Australia, North America, South America and India. It is one of the most successful models in the mid-size sedan, A3 car segment. It has helped Maruti Suzuki to gain a firm foothold in the compact sedan segment which has already sold over 36000 units since its launch in May 2007.
